Summer handicap- an account from Someone Who Was There!

THE SUMMER HANDICAP 2019…. It’s that time of year again, you know the one… the race everybody loves to hate, the village road runners handicap on the notorious Wirral Way πŸƒπŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ†πŸ†πŸΊ where every runner dreams of being crowned the champion…but dreads it so much πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„. The weather was perfect 🌞, the start of a hot spell but just enough breeze to run seemed, but despite the shade of the trees, and the stretch of the course that’s kind of Jurassic. It was quite warm… so the 35 eager runners set of in stages to tackle the 10k course that breaks many a runner.😒😩😫 We all set off with the same goal: it’s my turn to win it πŸ†We had the extra benefit this time of extra water stations with Mark Daniels at the 3k stage supplying the water and jelly babies, then the road crossing was manned by Jacqueline Allison and Jennie Langston, armed with George’s water pistol πŸ”« to cool some of us down, always welcome when the body is cooking. After that another water station courtesy of Sam Stringer and Lou Saunders. At this stage, most of the early runners were looking over their shoulders.. the fast ones are coming, and right on our heels πŸ‘  πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘  This is when you either know, I’m knackered, or I’m going for this. One by one they came, even the speedy Steven Leslie was hot on the heels as we approached the halfway water station, Jennie Brown and Alistair as ever supplying the water and encouragement along with Sandra Riley who had jelly babies and chocolate minstrels: that ended Jack Kileys! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Two determined warriors wanted the crown more than any – the guest runners Jennifer Keenan and Adam won the men’s and women’s title. The main titles went to two people who are well deserving of the title of champions πŸ†πŸ†πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒπŸ»β€β™‚οΈ of the summer handicap.. the first.. Tony Clixby, a man who just over a year ago had broken his ankle at vitality London 😫.. but rehabilitation and a massive desire and determination to get back running πŸƒπŸ»β€β™‚οΈ saw him just pip Mark Critchley to the title. Both great runners, but Tony triumphed, what a story πŸ‘πŸ‘. The woman’s Champion, and again, great courage and determination shown saw β€œ Jo Blogs β€œ Jo Dutton claim the title, a worthy winner who stuck to the task to win the crown.. a tremendous effort by both, and by every competitor tonight, the smiles on every runners faces as photographer Will Critchley captured on the run in, and special thanks to Lucy Mc, Emily Mc, and Mel Mc for providing the water at the end.. Race over and the presentation party at the Nags Head, who always are so accommodating for us, summer in the beer garden 🌞🌞🍺🍺🍺🍺🍾🍾πŸ₯‚, over 50 helpers, supporters and runners enjoyed the warm summers evening. We will look back at today’s killer heat with fond nostalgia, when we all look forward to doing this race in the colder month of January…love or hate this race, we all turn up and give it our all. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒπŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸƒπŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸƒπŸ»β€β™‚οΈ
