Reflections on the Autumn tour to Ghent

The Ghent Tour…Firstly, big πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ to John Milward for such a great choice for this autumn tour to Belgium and to Gary Jenkinson for his organising of the tour, πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡©πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒπŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸ₯‡There was a great turnout of 48 participants pounding the streets of this great little city, heading there from Manchester βœˆοΈβœˆοΈπŸš…,to Charleroi or Brussels – some even took the train πŸ˜‰in a two day pilgrimage. Those that arrived on the Friday took in the sights of Belgium’s capital whilst the European Union considered brexit πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§and there was no leaving for the mighty Village Road Runners πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒπŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸƒπŸ»β€β™‚οΈyet, we had our agenda 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺. Arriving in Ghent later to a very pretty city, with lots of πŸ•πŸ’’β›ͺ️ to explore, as well of course, the bars and restaurants πŸ₯™πŸ•πŸ₯—πŸ²πŸ₯§ and not forgetting plenty of 🍫🍫🍫🍫 and with various other cities within a short πŸš‚πŸš‚ distance, this tour ticked the boxes. The Sunday was Race Day πŸƒπŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ₯‡and huge congratulations to Steven Leslie and Raul Mur for their efforts in tackling the marathon πŸ‘πŸ‘then all the 28 VRR 10k runners: some great achievements in this too, for Gail Stuthridge,Carolyn Atherton, Tony Clixby Mark Daniels and even Mr Topsy Turvey Grandad Dave whose party trick nowadays seems to be falling over πŸ˜‚all achieving good for age titles, with Gail coming in 3rd overall in the 10k πŸ‘πŸ‘ cheered on by our great support team of Sharon Clixby Jennie Brown, Anne Kiley and Gail Goodall, Sue Weedon and Assunta Dragotti. After the 10k we hung on a bit longer: it was the time for the Half Marathon runners and 5k to get under starters orders, a practical full day of athletics, and some of the 5k runners had previously done the 10kπŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺ all receiving copious bottles of the mighty strong Dark Dragon πŸ‰ beer, a recipe for disaster. As you know, the VRR love a good beer 🍺 especially afterwards in an Irish bar, some football match was on tele πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰. A very boisterous night and a few sore heads in the morning to come. There’s nothing better than letting your hair down after a race πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚. The next few days saw those who stayed visit Brugge,Antwerp,Brussels or just chilling in Ghent by having walking tours or hiring one of the millions of 🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲 they outnumber all other vehicles ten fold. Yesterday was mine and Jennie’s last day, and though some had visited the Flanders Fields at Ypres, we stayed for Nightly Ritual at the Menin Gate WW1 memorialπŸ› where the last post is played 🎺🎺as a permanent reminder to all those who fell during the Great War, a sombre and humbling moment, brings home what they went through for others..

Already the numbers are rising for the spring tour to Pathos πŸ‘πŸ‘
